چکیده

Recent work in experimental economics has raised that observed behavior depends on whether wealth was windfall or earned. This paper extends this work by considering whether earned wealth a ects bidding behavior in an induced-value second-price auction. We nd people bid more sincerely in the auction with earned wealth given monetary incentives; earned wealth did not induce sincere bidding in hypothetical auctions.

A random nth-price auction

Second-price auctions are designed to induce people to reveal their private preferences for a good. Laboratory evidence suggests that while these auctions do a reasonable job on aggregate, they fall short at the individual level, especially for bidders who are off-margin of the market-clearing price. Herein we introduce and explore whether a random nth-price auction can engage all bidders to bi...

Cheating in Second Price Auctions with Affiliated Values

We model cheating in second price auctions when valuations of bidders are affiliated. Bidders predict cheating behavior by an unfair seller who can observe the bids submitted by all bidders and then submits his extra bid to increase the payment of the winning bidder. We derive a symmetric equilibrium strategy in the cheating model. Moreover, we conduct a numerical analysis to compare a second p...

Efficiency in auctions with crossholdings∗

We study the impact of crossholdings on the efficiency of the standard auction formats. If both bidders with crossholdings and bidders without crossholdings participate in the auction process, neither the first-price auction nor the second-price auction is efficient. The ascending auction is not equivalent to the second-price auction. In a class of examples, the ascending auction is efficient. ...

Two-Stage Buy-It-Now Auctions

This paper studies auctions with a temporary Buy-It-Now (BIN) price using a two-stage model. In the first stage, a group of bidders (early bidders) are offered a ”Buy-It-Now” (BIN) option to purchase the item immediately at a listed price (BIN price). If no early bidder accepts the BIN price, the BIN option disappears and the second stage starts with an additional group of bidders (late bidders...

Optimal auctions with endogenous budgets

We study the benchmark independent private value auction setting when bidders have endogenously determined budgets. Before bidding, a bidder decides how much money she will borrow. Bidders incur a cost to borrowing. We show that bidders are indifferent between participating in a first-price, second-price and all-pay auction. The all-pay auction gives higher revenue than the first-price auction,...
